The Unique Origins of KTM®

The KTM Company can trace its origins back to one man, Johann (Hans) Trunkenpolz, who set up a car repair shop in Mattighofen, Austria in 1934. After World War 2 Johann began manufacturing his own motorcycles and named his business Kronreif, Trunkenpolz, Mattighofen- or KTM. 

KTM® Racing History 

In 1954, KTM made its racing debut with one of the first off-road motorcycles, taking home gold! The company’s first sports bike would come out soon after in 1957, with a moped following close behind. Several of the company’s mopeds would become popular vehicles. However, their off-road motorcycle, The Comet, would become synonymous with racing for years to come. In 1974 KTM would win their very first motocross championship, following up on their win with 260 more in the subsequent years. As of 2003 the company has even begun to produce racing cars, participating in several road racing competitions!

The Popularity of KTM®

In 1968 KTM began shipping to the U.S. The company was a huge success and is partly why KTM is now one of the leading off-road motorcycle manufacturers in the world. KTM’s reputation as a racing legend as well as their uniquely powerful engines are the primary reason the company is so popular. Their quality assurance is also a contributor to the brand’s success, as each bike engine is still made in Munderfing, Austria, today! In the 1980’s the brand saw a temporary dip in profits as the market became oversaturated with a number of new models and brands. However, their products’ quality and power have withstood the test of time and have remained one of the best companies to purchase from to this day.
